BitNinja Server Security

BitNinja Server Security

On November 27th, 2023, BitNinja Server Security was installed and running on the Athena Server.

What Is BitNinja?

BitNinja is a comprehensive server security platform. Much like WordFence, BitNinja records malicious IPs and shares them globally, in real time, with other connected servers. This creates a globally protected website and server network.

BitNinja also scans client sites for real-time threats and malware. It provides a robust WAF (Web Application Firewall), server hardening, as well as outgoing email and other website protection.

The 3 most common types of attacks that BitNinja helps to protect against are the following:

  1. CMS Hacks:
These are targeted attacks against known vulnerabilities of popular Content Managers (i.e. WordPress), or simple brute force attempts to hijack users. BitNinja can prevent these attempts before they even occur.
  2. Port Scanning:
This is a common type of attack where automated bots connect to vulnerable ports. The BitNinja Port Honeypot module blocks these attacks and protects all servers by greylisting the IPs.
  3. XMLRPC
This is a type of Remote Procedure Call that can be dangerous for sites using CMSs. WordPress by default is especially vulnerable to this type of attack. Inbound requests for XMLRPC are disabled by default on the server. BitNinja also blocks POST requests and IP addresses to XMLRPC to help protect servers and domains.

Why BitNinja?

Server security is one of our paramount concerns—we focus on providing the most secure yet cost-effective hosting environment possible. We have looked at several options over the last couple of months. We selected BitNinja, based on our own experience and its record over time.

When we used the software from late 2015 to 2016, we found it to be an effective and all-encompassing solution, with minimal impact to client sites. Since then, it has come a long way.

Although considered redundant, we will continue to retain ImunifyAV+ and WordFence (on client sites) in addition to BitNinja.

Note to Clients

While we don’t expect any issues, please note that any time firewalls or security services are implemented, there is always the potential for a disruption to service.

Should you witness any unusual occurrences or issues this week, please reach out directly to us via customer support.

As usual, we will do our best to accommodate any issues or concerns as quickly and diligently as possible. Should you have any further questions, please reach out to us directly.
